Yet another Olympic gold medal has been awarded this week. The event overtaking the past couple of days has been the downhill skiing event. The gold medal winner was a 35 year old Norwegian skier named Aksel Lund Svindal. He is now the oldest downhill gold medalist of all time. He is also referred to as the “Iron Man” of skiing. He won by only .12 of a second ahead of fellow Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud. Svindal has been a dominant skier for years, winning 3 medals in the Vancouver Olympics. But after a disappointing fourth place finish at the Sochi games, and a crash in January of 2016 that tore his ACL. A successful comeback looked very unlikely. But his road to recovery went better then expected and he was back in top form just in time to win the 2017 World Championships. He returned to Pyeongchang ready to redeem himself, and he did just that. Beating out everyone, including the returning champion, to put him back on top of the podium.
