NFL Season Kickoff

The 2017 NFL season started this past weekend and there are already many big headlines to feature in just one week of playing. Many of these happened before the very first kickoff. The Houston Texans honored all of the first responders of Hurricane Harvey during a patriotic pregame ceremony which was very emotional for the whole team and all those involved.  Cowboys’s star running back Ezekiel Elliot had a six game suspension repealed due to his court case being found unfair. This will allow him to play in all games until more evidence is brought up concerning his domestic violence accusation. Le’Veon Bell for the Pittsburgh Steelers also held out from practices, this due to his choice to not practice or play until the team provided him with a bigger contract. Bell eventually caved and agreed to play under the franchise tag. His lack of practice time could be seen in his game against the Browns. Bell managed only 32 yards on 10 attempts. His teammate Antonio Brown on the other hand was at practice, he caught 11 passes for 182 yards. He made up over half of the Steelers overall yards in their victory over the Cleveland Browns. The Steeler’s division rival Cincinnati Bengals had a very rough opening week against the Baltimore Ravens. Cincinnati’s quarterback Andy Dalton had 4 interceptions and lost a fumble in their 20-0 loss. Another team that had a tough loss in Week 1 was the defending Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. They lost 42-27 to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Another great thing about the first week of football is to see team’s brand new draft picks showing off what they got. There was a multitude of young players that had great starts to their young careers. DeShone  Kizer the new quarterback for the Cleveland Browns showed lots of promise in his near upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kizer passed for 222 yards and a touchdown in his first ever NFL game. Leonard Fournette rushed for 100 yards against a formidable Houston defense. JJ Watt’s younger brother TJ Watt had a historic debut for the Pittsburgh Steelers with 6 tackles, 2 sacks, and an interception. He is the first rookie to have a sack and an interception in his first ever NFL game. Christian McCaffrey had an impressive showing in his first game in a Carolina Panthers Uniform. He showed off his dual threat abilities with 5 catches for 38 yards and rushing 13 times for 47 yards. On Monday night Dalvin Cook showed off his running abilities and rushed for 127 yards in his Vikings debut. Some teams gained some great players, and others lost some really good players due to injury. Odell Beckham Jr. was unable to play due to his high ankle sprain. Cardinal’s star David Johnson is expected to be sidelined until Week 8 with a dislocated wrist.

These are all from just one week of the NFL,and who knows how much more drama, injuries, painful losses, and glorious victories these next few months will provide for us. in yet another eventful NFL season.
