The 103rd Rose Bowl was an instant classic. This year it was a battle between the USC Trojans and the Penn State Nittany Lions. The high scoring game ended with a 52-49 victory for the Trojans after kicker Matt Boermeester made a 46 yard field goal in the final seconds. USC controlled most of the first quarter and led with a score of 13-0 going into the second quarter. The Nittany Lions did not get off to a great start. Their first four drives ended with a turnover or a punt. However, after their first disastrous drives the Lions scored seven straight touchdowns on their next seven drives. Penn State took a 49-35 lead into the 4th quarter. The Nittany Lions were shut out in the 4th quarter and could get nothing going on offense. USC was led by Redshirt Freshman QB Sam Darnold, who scored 17 straight points to steal the game. Darnold threw for 453 yards and 5 touchdowns while Nittany Lion QB Trace McSorley threw for 254 yards and 4 touchdowns. Although one team had to lose this game, it will be remembered as one of the best Rose Bowls in recent memory.
