The 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, was sworn into office on Friday, January 20th in Washington, D.C.. Trump’s inauguration took place in front of the U.S. Capital building while crowds that stretched from Capital Hill to the National Mall looked on. A parade down Pennsylvania Avenue followed the ceremony, in which Trump made his first speech as President of the United States. Vice President Mike Pence was also sworn in while his and Trump’s family watched on. Many were happy to see the new President officially take office, but there were just as many others that took to the streets to riot and protest the outcome of the election. Rioters set fire to cars and caused violence that injured six police officers. More than 217 people were arrested for causing mayhem in D.C.. Protesters cited the possibility of Trump creating policies that mirror his racist, sexist, and homophobic views as their reason for protesting. Whichever side you’re on, this inauguration certainly was one for the history books.
