The new movie, Split, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, came out January 20, 2017. The plot revolves around a man, named Kevin, who has 23 different personalities that compete to control his brain. Kevin kidnaps three girls in an attempt to unlock his 24th personality. His personality is fractured in this way as a result of suffering extreme abuse as a child. The premise of this movie is based on a real disorder called Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), also known as multiple personality disorder. DID is often triggered by childhood abuse, as depicted in the movie; however, the average DID patient would have less than 23 personalities. This movie draws inspiration from movies such as the Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. James McAvoy plays the starring role as Kevin. Shyamalan studied Dissociative Identity Disorder for fifteen years prior to filming. If this summary has peaked your interest, Split is now showing at Regal Cinemas.
