Tommy G. Thompson was one of the best treasure hunters of his era. Many people tried to discover the wreck of the S.S. Central America that sunk in 1857, but it wasn’t untilĀ 130 years later that Thompson came along to uncover the three tons of California gold on the sea floor near South Carolina. Thompson was only able to do this with the help of his investors, who gave him financial assistance in return for a percentage of the money he earned from his finds. However, Thompson was accused of cheating his investors by keeping the location of the treasure a secret. After learning that Thompson had discovered the S.S. Central American, federal officials tracked him down to pay his angered investors. After being found, Thompson was was put in an Ohio jail until he reveals the location of the gold. Although Thompson has been threatened, he has not given up his secret.
