Songify May Help Anxiety

Recently, mental-health specialists are using the app Songify to help people overcome anxious thoughts. This app turns any words you say into a song. The principle of this is that singing the thoughts bottled up in your mind separate you from the meaning of them. Around 80-90% of the population experiences intrusive thoughts that range from OCD to anxiety. “There is no delete button in the nervous system, but telling yourself not to think about something, you’re increasing the number of associates that remind you of it.” says Steven Hayes, a psychology professor at the University of Nevada. Normally, we don’t think much of a song, so that is what the specialists are trying to do with your thoughts. Before Songify even came out to the world, therapists would have their patients sing their worries. Researchers say that the song technique works better than stress management, distraction, or breathing exercises. According to The Atlantic “A study found that various defusion techniques, including singing the unwanted thought and saying it in a cartoon voice, reduced the frequency of the thought while making it less believable.” So if you think you are alone with damaging thoughts, don’t fret, you can simply download an app, and maybe that can help.
