In Florida, over 300 manatees were found crowded into the Three Sisters Springs, which has an area of only 1 square acre! This past Monday, many local volunteers took on the task of counting all of the creatures. There were 150 more than this region has ever recorded. To protect the well-being of the manatees, the springs have been closed temporarily. The Three Sisters Springs is a very popular kayaking and swimming location so many of the people out on the water got to witness the incredible spectacle . Springs environmental educations guide Laura Ruettiman, told MSN “the manatees arrive during cold weather and high tides.” With that being said, the Springs are sure to see a great deal of manatees when the manatees need to warm up. This also helped Fish and Wildlife Service to officially take the manatees off the endangered species list!
