Boehner resigns at end of October

House speaker John Boehner has announced that he will resign at the end of October. Boehner says that he is resigning as a result of the conservative wing of the party. The Ohio republican surprised the party by announcing this, and many were shocked and somewhat angered by his decision. The announcement came one day after the congressman’s highest point of his career: the historic speech by Pope Francis to congress by Boehner’s request. Boehner has held the role of Speaker of the House since January of 2011. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told reporters, “he will be missed,┬ábecause there is simply no one like him. Now is the time for our conference to focus on healing and unifying to face the challenges ahead and always do what is best for the American people.”
